Tadotsu Town, Kagawa

Tadotsu was a small clan holding 10,000 koku (approximately 1,803.9 cubic meters of crop yields) separated from the Marugame clan in 1694, but it was developed as a port town where the port was maintained with huge investment and Kitamae-bune was also anchored. In addition, it was crowded with boats from Saigoku to visit Kompira. In particular, sugar, cotton and salt were the main products called “Sanuki Sanpaku”. Ryotaro Shiba described Tadotsu in “Nanohana-no-Oki” as “In the world of ships, Tadotsu is not a countryside. Ship carpenters are rather more than Hyogo. ” The Tadotsu Municipal Museum exhibits a model of the middle 18th century Bezai ship, the third oldest in the country. Bezai ships born in the Seto Inland Sea have good sailing performance, and in the days of Kitamae-bune, hulls in other regions disappeared. Tadotsu’s ship model conveys the smart form of Bezai ship in the earliest days.
